I like secret things... A HIDDEN ROOM, THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
I've always been a bit obsessed with Chanel's apartment, mostly because it's filled with the most delicious trinkets beyond imagination and then knowing it's reserved for the most influential and house favorites makes it even more mysterious and interesting. This apartment is located on the 2nd floor at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris hidden between the Haute Couture salons and the Studio and in 2013 The French Ministry of culture classified the apartment and the mirrored staircase as historical monuments.
Chanel never slept at the apartment, always choosing to go to her suite at the Ritz each night, but she decorated every inch and it has been preserved exactly as it was when Chanel died in 1971. Some notable guests to her apartment when she was alive include Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. It's filled with handmade Chinese silk screens, furniture she designed herself, custom made chandeliers, trinkets dedicated to her star sign Leo, number fives, crystals, camellias, statues and bird cages to name just a few.
There have been collections inspired by her apartment and even an exhibit titled, "Second Floor: The Private Apartment of Mademoiselle Chanel" with 34 never before seen images photgraphed of the interior by director and artist Sam Taylor-Johnson. The floor above it remains a working atelier and Chanel now owns townhouses and has expanded on Rue Cambon, but Coco's apartment will always remain private, filled with her spirit and style and something we will definitely dream of visiting one day.
